Affordable Eyewear was started back in the summer of 1987 in Montgomery, Alabama. Hobson Cox and Ramona Crawford Cox were operating the Pearle Vision Franchise located in Eastdale Mall beginning in July 1985. Hobson and Pearle Vision parted ways in late 1987. Hobson was making glasses out of their home in Montgomery, and Ramona had leased space from a local Ophthalmologist Marion I Allman M.D. They decided to call the Shoppe,  Affordable Eyewear Boutique. Hobson was selling sunglasses and just about any type of eyewear he could from the house and  through area retailers who offered non corrective sunglasses. Hobson and Ramona have a combined 62 years of experience in the optical industry.

When the Cox Family first opened Affordable Eyewear the dream was to put a location in their home town. Ramona is rooted in Perote, and Hobson was born in Smuteye, in Bullock County Alabama. Hobson and Ramona have had a lot  good times over the last 28 years in Bullock County, and Ramona has taken a job teaching at the middle school. "We think there's a tremendous amount of wealth of American tradition and values here in Bullock County." We live in the Smuteye Community now.
